Abstract

This article analyzes the Marechal Cândido Mariano Rondon Municipal School, a rural primary school in Serra da Hulha Negra, linked to Bagé and, after 1992, to Hulha Negra (RS). The corpus gathers 148 digitized documents, produced between its recognized operation in 1961 and 1993, examined through external and internal source criticism and the analysis of school material culture, within cultural history. The study argues that the school operated as a school-archive, a nucleus that produced schooling, family classification, sanitary observation, religious sociability, and territorial memory. The categorial system of school-census, school-clinic, school-visit, and school-campaign, formulated and delimited here, grasps the rural institution as a dense surface of inscription of social life and contributes to the historiography of Brazilian rural education.

Author Biography

  • Simone Gomes de Faria, Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Brasil
    He has a degree in literature from the University of the Campanha Region (2002, a degree in history from Centro Universitário
    Internacional (2022), and a degree in pedagogy from the same institution (2022). She has a master's degree in history from the Federal
    University of Rio Grande (2016), focusing on the line of research in history of education, and a PhD in education from the Federal
    University of Pelotas (2024). She works as an elementary school teacher at the Escola Municipal de Ensino Fundamental Monteiro Lobato
    and is a public candidate for the Bagé City Council, also teaching at the Escola Municipal de Ensino Fundamental Maria Machado Molina.
    Throughout his academic and professional career, he has developed solid experience in the areas of literature and history, with an
    emphasis on the history of education, school institutions, school culture, and rural institutions. His research explores themes such
    as oral history, teacher training, German immigration, and school culture, investigating the intertwining between memory, identity,
    and educational processes in different historical contexts. His work with rural school institutions and school culture reflects his
    commitment to understanding the social and cultural dynamics that shape educational practices and teacher training. His academic
    career reflects a constant search for the intersection between teaching, research, and the formation of values, contributing to the
    strengthening of the history of education and teaching as fields of investigation and transformative practice.
