Cardiovascular profile of a sample of elderly in the city of Cruz Alta - RS

Abstract

Brazil is getting older, the Census of 2000, we had more than 14.5 million seniors. The increase in longevity increases the importance of maintaining health and autonomy of this population, as advancing age, by itself, increases the risk of chronic non communicable diseases, especially cardiovascular. Several studies indicate that the loco regional cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) are prevalent in the elderly. To describe the cardiovascular profile of a sample of elderly people from Cruz Alta - RS. A sample of 313 elderly (55,6% women), we investigated the presence of CVRF through a questionnaire, including hypertension (HBP), hypercholesterolemia (HCT), diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertriglyceridemia (HTG), smoking, sedentary lifestyle, stress and family history of myocardial infarction (FH-MI), followed by CVRF assessment, including anthropometric data and laboratory data. Results: Presence of CVRF in the elderly: hypertension in 56,9%, HCT 29,2%, DM 11,5%, 16,6% in HTG, smoking in 11,5%, 63,6% in sedentary, stress in 49,8%, and HF-AMI in 21,4%. In assessing CVRF met blood pressure 138,6 ± 19,7/83,9 ± 12,3 mm Hg; Body Mass Index 27,4 ± 4,7 kg/m2; circumference 97,7 ± 12,9 cm. Laboratory evaluation was obtained the following results: total cholesterol 208,0 ± 49,2 mg/dL, glucose 102,4 ± 28,8 mg/dL, triglycerides 151,7 ± 88,6 mg/dL. The results indicate that the presence of CVRF for cardiovascular events are very close to the national data. Further evaluations should be conducted with different samples of elderly in order to monitor the health of this population, and thereby engage targets in aging healthy and active.
