Abstract

When working as a student for the project O Morro Conta sua História, I became very interested in elderly theme. So, this paper aims at questioning the strictly chronological and rigid meaning for the word elder and relating it to the elderly representation in the novel A varanda do frangipani, by Mia Couto. The conflict between ancient and modern world in Moçambique, since its independence from Portugal in 1975, and the role of low social class elderly in this post-war antagonist context will be analyzed here.
