Abstract

The increase in the number of elderly in world population and increasing demand of the population by the health services necessitate the adequacy of the built environment to promote a quality of care and support in the existing legislation in the country. Thus, an analysis was performed of environments for free access to a geriatric clinic in Recife, whereas especially in the area concerned customers should move freely, depending on the lowest possible level of support, supervision or management of health professionals. For this was used as a parameter to NBR 9050/04 which deals with accessibility to buildings, furniture, equipment and urban spaces. The result obtained was that more than half of the clinic is accessible, yet has no environment that meets all the requirements, in particular health, with a major index of inadequacy. The enforcement of accessibility is necessary to adhere to the minimum conditions of infrastructure for a high-quality care, advocating in their own space the possibility of autonomy and independence for the elderly.
