Non-operative treatment of occlusal surface of permanent first molars - 18-month control

The aim of this study was to evaluate dental plaque and caries presence on occlusal surfaces of permanent first molars with a mo- dified tooth brushing technique in comparison to resin and glass iono- mer sealants. The sample consis- ted of 120 preschool children with a mean age of 5.4 years from Bau- ru- SP-Brazil. This study included oral health education and oral hygiene instruction. The sample was divided into 3 groups. Group 1 included 60 children, whose pa- rents or responsible person should accomplish the teeth brushing twi- ce a day. In group 2 (26 children), “Delton” (Dentsply) resin sealant was applied and in group 3 (34 children), glass ionomer “Vidrion R”(SS White) was applied. Dental examination was conducted at baseline, 6, 12 and 18 months. The results showed dental plaque decreased as the tooth entered into occlusion. Resin sealants showed more retention than the glass ionomer. It was concluded that all tested procedures were effective in limiting caries initiation and progress and parents’ cooperation is essential for caries prevention and plaque control.
