Abstract

This study reviews 147 cases of pyogenic granuloma from the files of the Centro de Diag- nóstico e Histopatologia (CDH) of the Faculdade de Odontologia of the Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Brazil, observed from 1965 to 1997. This entity was more frequent in women (68.3%) than in men (31.7%). Fifteen cases (10.2%) were ob- served in pregnant women. This high frequence suggests an hormonal influence in the develop- ment of this lesion. The majority of the lesions (69.2%) was located in the gingiva, which could indicate the role of tartar and bacterial plaque as local factors to induce the lesion development. Clinical and histologic characteristics of this le- sion were similar to the ones previously reported in literarure. Key words: pyogenic granuloma; pregnancy tumor.
