Abstract

The aim of this work was to compare the hematological profile between patients with RAU, and smokers and non-smokers ones, without RAU. The sample con- sisted of women and men aging from 15 to 60 years, divided into 3 groups: a) group 1: patients with RAU ; b) group 2: smoker patients; c) group 3 (control group): non- smokers patients without RAU. The values of blood cell counts and eritrosedimentation rate were col- lected from records, compared and analyzed using descriptive statis- tics and ANOVA test. The results showed: (1) the leucocytes counts were significantly higher in group 2 (smokers) when comparing to group 1 (patients with RAU); (2) group 1 (patients with RAU) showed eritrosedimentation rate significantly higher than the other groups; (3) median corpuscular volume (MCV) was significantly higher in group 2 (smokers), when compared to group 1 (patients with RAU). This study concluded that: there is no association between RAU and blood cell counts; patients with RAU show eritrosedimentation rate significantly higher than non- RAU patients. Key words: aphthae, RAU, oral mucosa, ulceration, eritrosedimen- tation rate, blood cell counts.
