Abstract

Objective: the present study aimed to evaluate, in vitro, acidic beverages erosive potential, commonly ingested by the population and found in Grande Florianópolis, SC, Brazil, commerce. Method: the beverages erosive potential measurement was undertaken by detecting hydrogen potential (pH) and titratable acidity (TA). The sample consists of cola-based soft drinks, Coca-Cola® and Pepsi®; isotonic Gatorade®-strawberry and passion fruit and Powerade®-fruit mix; Industrialized teas Natural Tea®-lemon and Matte Leão®-natural tea; Red Bull® and Monster Energy® energy drinks; natural juices of Orange Pear and Lemon Tahiti; flavored water H2OH! ®-lemon flavor; and mineral water, for the control group. The pH was measured with a digital pH meter (Sensoglass SP1800) and for TA, the method standardized by Instituto Adolfo Lutz was used, all tests were performed in triplicate. For the descriptive statistical analysis, t test and ANOVA were employed. Results: the lowest pH values were found in Coca-Cola® drink with and lemon juice, both with 2,3. For TA, the samples that showed the highest values were natural juices, with 35,1 for lemon juice and 13,53for orange juice. All analyzed beverages have erosive potential for tooth enamel, as they have pH values below 5.5. Regarding TA measurement, natural juices showed the highest values. Conclusion: all beverages in the study were considered imminently erosive to the dental structure.
