Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of anti-calculus toothpastes through a literature review. Methods: The present study was carried out through a narrative literature review, the search terms searched were anti-calculus toothpastes and their main agents/active principles in three databases. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were established. Results: A total of 18 studies were included in the review, all randomized clinical trials published between 1998 and 2022. Among the highest level of evidence is sodium hexametaphosphate, with three studies with the largest sample in which all obtained satisfactory results in reduction of supragingival calculus formation, triclosan associated with methyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride (PVM/MA) showed good results in calculus reduction, used at the same concentration in two studies, while triclosan only and zinc citrate did not obtain positive results. The current results with pyrophosphate are antagonistic, since two studies show positive results and another one does not. Conclusions: therefore, it was possible to evaluate the clinical efficacy of anticalculus toothpastes, which related to sodium hexametaphosphate and triclosan associated with PVM/MA showed regular performance in the clinical control of supragingival calculus formation/reformation
