Abstract

The benign cementoblastoma is a benign neoplasia of odontogenic origin. It is characterized for the formation ofmasses similar to cementum and its occurrence is relatively rare. In the present study, a literature review of cases reported from 1990 to 2001 was carried out, in Medline, Lilax and BBO indices, including a new case. The data were tabulated and analyzed to identify the clínical and radiographic characteristics ofthe injury , as well as the techniques used in its treatment, comparing with the characteristics and treat- ment of the case reporto It was got as result that the benign cementoblastoma corresponds to 2% of odontogenic origin tumors and does not possess predilection for sex; in 78.9%ofthe cases, it occurs before the age ofSü.The expansion ofbone cortical occurs in 68.4% of the cases and patients report pain in 78.8%. The jaw is mostly affected, mainly lower first molars; root resorption is always present, and radiographically, the lesion shows itself as a radiopaque mass with radiolucenthalo in 68.75%ofthe cases with a mean size of 14.3 mm. The treatment generally consists of removingthe tumor with the involved tooth, followedby bone curettage. In its distinguishingdiagnosisit must be included: odontoma, osteoblastoma, focal sclerosing osteomyelitis , hypercementosis, periapical osteoid cemental dysplasia, osteoma, cementifying fibroma, osteoma and osteosarcoma. Key words: cementoblastoma, benign eementoblastoma, eementoma, odontogenic neoplasm, odontogenic tumors, radiopaque mass.
