Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the correlation between the car- ies experience in deciduous molars and first permanent molars with children between the ages of 6 to 9 years- old. Methods: The population studied comprised of 74 children receiving dental assistance in the Odontopedi- atric clinic at Univali between the semesters 2009.1 and 2009.2. The tool used in this research was their record which had in odontograms, from where was able to record the dmf-DM (decayed/missing/filled deciduous molar) and DMF-PM (decayed/missing/filled permanent molar). Results: The dmf-DM (scores 0 to 8) with mean and standard deviation of 3,22 e 2,73, respectively, and 28,7% had dmf-DM = 0 and 71,6% had their dmf- DM>0. In relation to their first permanent molar, 74,3% of the children had DMF-PM = 0 and 25,7% DMF-PM > 0. The DMF-PM (scores 0 to 4) with mean and standard deviation of 0,47 e 0,90 respectivily. There is no sta- tistically significant difference between ages in relation with dmf-DM, however, when compared to DMF-PM, it was observed as statistically significant when compar- ing between ages 8 and 9 years old. When related to genders, it was also not observed to have any statistical- ly significant difference. The bivariate analysis from the variables, dmf-DM and DMF-PM did not show a signifi- cant correlation (Sperman coefficient was (rs = 0,151)), showing that dmf-DM did not influence the DMF-PM. Conclusions: It was not found that an increase in the experience of caries related to age, except when com- pared to DMF-PM between 8 and 9 years old; also it was not observed that there was a statistic difference between genders; in the sample studied the dmf-DM did not influence the DMF-PM.
