In the last few years, different studies have evaluated the role of the periodontal disease as a risk factor for the development of various systemic conditions. It has been suggested that the periodontal disease would act as a reservoir for the translocation of bacteria to other distant sites, determining the development of other diseases or conditions, such as premature and low weight infant, heart and lung diseases, bacterial endocarditis. Also, it has been suggested that periodontal disease influence the development of ischemic and hemorrhagic encephalic vascular accidents, evidencing the participation of periodontal pathogens in the formation of ateromas. The aim of this study is to present a literature review, investigating the mechanisms by which the periodontal disease could influence the development of stroke.Downloads
