Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate bone thickness in the midpalatal and parasagittal regions using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in patients with different vertical skeletal facial patterns. Method: CBCT images of 68 adult patients (32 men and 36 women), aged between 19 and 63 years, were analyzed. Three groups were established according to the vertical skeletal pattern, determined by the SNGoGn mandibular plane angle (hypodivergent: < 28°, normodivergent: 28°–36°, and hyperdivergen:t > 36°). Palatal bone thickness was measured on coronal reconstructions at 14 mm posterior to Point A (third palatal rugae region) and at 28 mm posterior to Point A (first molar region), along the midpalatal suture and 3 mm parasagittally on both the right and left sides. Results: Although a trend toward greater bone thickness was observed in hypodivergent patients, the correlation was weak and not statistically significant. No correlation was found between anterior and posterior palatal measurements. Conclusion: No correlation was observed between vertical facial pattern and palatal bone thickness. Although thicker bone was more prevalent in the hypodivergent group and thinner bone in the hyperdivergent group, vertical skeletal pattern cannot be considered a determinant of bone thickness in the midpalatal region.
