Objective: To investigate factors associated with negative self-perceived oral health among a Quilombola population in southwestern Bahia, Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional, population-based epidemiological study was conducted among adult and older Quilombola residents. Data were collected through structured interviews using an instrument previously used to assess oral health conditions and access to oral health services. Descriptive analyses were performed using absolute and relative frequency distributions. Binary logistic regression was used to investigate factors associated with negative self-perceived oral health. Variables with p<0.20 in the crude analyses were considered eligible for inclusion in the multivariable model, which was fitted using the backward conditional method. Associations with p<0.05 in the final model were considered statistically significant. Additional sex-stratified analyses were performed on an exploratory basis. Results: Negative self-perceived oral health was reported by 49.0% of participants with available outcome data. Older participants had lower odds of negative self-perceived oral health than adults (OR=0.61; 95% CI: 0.42-0.89), whereas participants reporting tooth loss had higher odds of negative self-perceived oral health (OR=1.68; 95% CI: 1.06-2.68). In the sex-stratified analysis, older women had lower odds of negative self-perceived oral health than adult women (OR=0.54; 95% CI: 0.31-0.94). Conclusion: Negative self-perceived oral health was highly prevalent among the Quilombola population studied. Older participants had lower odds of negative self-perceived oral health, whereas those reporting tooth loss had higher odds of the outcome. In the sex-stratified analysis, older women had lower odds of negative self-perceived oral health than adult women.
