Unethical and discriminatory behavior towards HIV+ patients among dental students

The study set out to identify the frequency and factors associated with the adoption of unethical and discriminatory behavior towards HIV-positive patients (HIV+) among undergraduate dental students. To this end, a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was conducted with undergraduate dentistry students from a Higher Education Institution (HEI) in the Sertão region of Pernambuco, Brazil. Those regularly enrolled at the institution between the 6th and 10th semester were included. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and processed using the SPSS 20.0 statistical software using logistic regression at a level of p = 0.05. The study received ethical approval (Opinion number: 5.612.156). Of the 166 individuals, 34.8% (n = 58) reported some unethical or discriminatory conduct towards HIV+ patients. The chances of committing such conduct were significantly higher among those without knowledge of dental care biosafety protocols (p<0.05). Referring HIV+ patients to exclusive clinics was the most common type of unethical/discriminatory conduct among students (21.5%; n = 35). It can be concluded that unethical and discriminatory behavior towards HIV+ patients was relatively common among dental students and the lack of knowledge about biosafety was the determining factor for adopting such practices.
