Resumo

O Rio Grande do Sul foi erigido sob uma realidade fronteiriça e belicosa, onde os senhores da guerra exerceram, desde o século XVIII importante in fluência na sociedade local. Desse processo his-tórico resultou uma elite política que apresentava fortes vínculos familiares com altos oficiais militares. De famílias abastadas, muitos deles também foram agraciados com títulos de nobreza pelo imperador. Manoel Luís Osório (1808-1879) foi a um só tempo, senador, mar-quês e marechal, ou seja, ocupou o topo das elites política, nobiliárquica e mili-tar. O presente texto visa investigar a sua trajetória e, a partir dela, analisar como as elites regionais participavam do mundo da alta política que conecta-va a província com o mundo da Corte, no Rio de Janeiro.
