Abstract

Este artigo apresenta as primeiras conclusões de uma pesquisa sobre os trabalhadores da pecuária na região de fronteira do Brasil com a República do Uruguai, com ênfase no estudo dos meios de pagamento dos salários dos peões de uma grande estância de criação. Primeiramente, são apresentadas algumas conclusões de estudos ante-riores sobre a combinação de trabalho escravo e livre nos grandes estabelecimentos pecuários. Depois, analisam-se os meios de remuneração dos peões, investigando a presença dos pagamentos em dinheiro ou mercadorias, bem com a época em que eram realizados tais pagamentos. As principais fontes utilizadas são fragmentos de registros contábeis de estâncias, inseridas em inventários post-mortem. Palavras-chave: Trabalho livre. Pecuária. Fronteira. Rio Grande do Sul.
