Abstract

Community practice and mentality are characteristics of many population groups in the world and, in Brazil, there have been several experiences in this regard. This text will address the specific case of Rio Grande do Sul, from the mid-1800s, particularly of communal forest territories. The narrative will be centered on the contestation of community identity through the privatization of these territories, discussing the socio-historical processes that led to a very particular regional development, permeated by conflicts and tensions. It intends to understand the north of Rio Grande do Sul, specifically the region that involved the then municipalities of Cruz Alta and Palmeira das Missões, at the time the Land Law of 1850 was being discussed and approved.
