Abstract

Abstract: Sustainability has become a protective parameter of human rights, with the aim of avoiding alterations or mutations such that they end up harming the human being both of current generations and, mainly, of future generations. In this context, the question that arises is: what risks does the new advances in genetics imply for the future of humanity? The present study analyzes the topic, starting with terminological clarifications about sustainability. Next, the principle of sustainability is analyzed in the specific areas of Bioethics - and Biolaw and Biomedicine. Ethics in the era of genetic engineering deserves reflection. This allows us to examine the feasibility of projecting sustainability in the areas mentioned. The application of the results of scientific research in such fields is producing changes that can be expected to improve health and, in turn, will be screened in several of the Human Rights. The human genome, transgenic organisms, organ transplantation, gene therapies, the production of drugs and treatments are affected by ethical and legal debates. Based on the question of whether there is a right or duty - obligation - to improve future generations, it is examined whether it is possible to configure a sustainable Biolaw, for which two assumptions are raised that are the respective exponents of a therapeutic treatment and a perfective eugenics. Sustainability leads one to question whether everything that can be scientifically done to improve the human race must be done, because the decisions that are adopted in the present will determine future generations.
