Abstract

This paper presents the effect of the critical buckling load on steel pillars considering the semi rigidity in the connections. The stiffness matrix of a frame element is developed considering the semi-rigidity of the nodes, with the critical buckling load obtained through the geometric stiffness matrix of the structure using the mean stiffness matrix instead of the interactive process for the calculation of the semi-rigid matrix. A numerical comparison of the critical buckling load is performed for various bond flexibility situations. Results show that the semi rigid stiffness matrix used in this study, as well as the mean stiffness matrix, is effective only up to a certain flexibility condition, not yielding satisfactory results for near flexible connections.
