Abstract

In the last years we have seen a massive growth in the number of devices, data traffic and amount of information produced in the Internet. The new generation of mobile communication, the 5G, has been designed to enable this growth and provide the necessary interoperability. Several technologies will be needed in this new standard, among them, Device-to-Device (D2D) communication, whereby devices can act as relay in the communication between the base station and the device. This increases the throughput and extends network connectivity, but increases transmissions. This work performs simulations to study how this increase will affect the energy consumption of relaying devices. We identified some scenarios in which the insertion of relays increases the energy consumption of the network and other where it decreases, relying on the number of relays.
