Abstract

Counterfeiting of banknotes is a real problem that affects the entire world, especially people with visual impairments and those without access to the financial system. In this study, a systematic literature review was conducted on the recognition of counterfeit banknotes with the aim of assessing the current state of the art, addressing the following research question: ``What computer vision approaches have been used to recognize counterfeit banknotes?''. As a result, this literature review selected 25 articles that underwent inclusion and exclusion criteria and were summarized based on the year of publication, the currency used, and the approach employed. Finally, an analysis of these results was performed, presenting perspectives for future research. Additionally, this article describes some datasets reported in the literature containing images of counterfeit and genuine banknotes available to the public.
