Abstract

The article refers to a research which clarifies the role of unbalanced social exchanges in older adults´ living arrangements transitions. Data from two surveys applied in 10 counties of Rio Grande do Sul formed a longitudinal data set. Those data are used to estimate specific hazard models that include measures of baseline living arrangements, demographic characteristics, family structure, and social exchanges. Specifically we used hazard models to identify transitions within the family and transitions to death (mortality). The results indicate that unbalanced exchange relationships are an integral part of the living arrangements transition process in later life.
