Abstract

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are the most common among chronic orofacial pains. This disorder causes pain and it affects daily activities and the quality of life of people. Objective: to verify the effects of ozone therapy on the treatment and pain decrease in temporomandibular disorders. Methods: A systematic review was performed in the SciELO, PubMed, Medline Bireme, Lilacs, and Cochrane Library databases using the descriptors: “Temporomandibular Joint Disorders”, “Ozone”, and “Ozone therapy”, in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, from March 2019 to June 2019. Results: Sixteen studies were found and, after a thorough analysis and the application of exclusion criteria, four complete studies that met the inclusion criteria were selected. Conclusion: Ozone therapy is an effective and safe method for the treatment of TMD-related pain. The four surveys included in this study showed that the temporomandibular joint heals very faster with ozone therapy than with other traditional therapies that were compared. However, further studies are required to standardize the issue of concentrations used and the time of treatment for temporomandibular disorders.
