Abstract

The objective of this study is to compare, in vitro, the flexural strength (σ 3P ), in three points, for premanufactured glass fiber posts (GF), carbon fiber posts coated by glass fiber (CGF) and carbon fiber posts (CF), testing the hypothesis that CF posts present greater σ 3P than the CGF and GF posts. Ten posts per group (n = 10) were examined: GF (control 1) – Reforpost, Angelus®; CF (control 2) - Reforpost, Angelus®; CGF (experimental group) – Reforpost Mix, Angelus®;. The posts were submitted to the σ 3P test, using a universal testing machine (EMIC DL 2000), with cross-head speed of 0,5 mm/min until specimens fractured. The σ 3P values were calculated according to ISO 10477:2004 and statistically analyzed by ANOVA (α = 0,01) and Newman-Keuls. The mean and standard deviation values were the following: GF = 1012,8323 ± (78,94)a MPa; CGF = 1240,9184 ± (142,95)b MPa; CF = 1408,5446 ± (99,78)c MPa. The mean σ 3P value of CF posts was significantly greater than the mean σ 3P value of CGF and GF posts, confirming the study hypothesis. A statistically significant difference was also found between GF and CGF. Key words: Glass fiber. Carbon fiber. Flexural strength.
