Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the ability to minimize dye leakage in the dentin with different techniques of apical resection. A total of twenty freshly extracted teeth (upper and lower canine) were accessed, cleansed, shaped and obturated, followed by division in two groups: A - apical resection with a 90° angle by diamond bur, ultrasonic root-end preparation and MTA filling; B - resection with 45° angle by diamond bur, carbide bur root-end prepation and amalgam filling. All the specimens were immersed in Rodamin B at 1% concentration for 24 hours. The area of dye penetration was determined using Image ToolTM program, after the roots being sectioned longitudinally and image caption. Dye penetration occurred in all specimens. The average of area leakage in both groups, A and B, was 22.43% and 30.06%, respectively. Results were treated by ANOVA test. No significant difference (p > 0.05) between groups was found. The resection with a 90° angle followed by ultrasonic and MTA is a good option for paraendodontic surgery. Key words: apicoectomy, ultrasonics, surgery, MTA, dental amalgam.
