Abstract

The purpose of this controlled, blind clinical trial was to examine the effect of Plantago australis L. solution as a contributor to the non-surgical treatment of the periodontal disease. The patients used chlorhexidine and P. austra- lis solutions as mouthrinses twice a day for five weeks. Then the patients were examined using a dental index, a gingival index and clinical evaluation of the tissue re- pair. The results showed that the P. australis solutions was not as ef- ficient as chlorhexidine to control the dental plaque accumulation, however it was as efficient as chlorhexidine to control gingival bleeding and gingival tissue re- pair. Based on these results, it can be said that P. australis solution is an alternative treatment for the inflammatory processes related to the periodontal disease. Key words: Plantago austra- lis L., chlorexidine, periodontal disease, indices.
