Abstract

Introduction: Whitening toothpastes containing “Blue covarine” are available on the market, an agent credited with a whitening effect promoted by optical changes on dental surfaces by depositing a thin bluish-colored film on the enamel. Objective: Systematic review the literature to verify if there is conclusive scientific evidence on the whitening effect of "Blue Covarine" on mineralized tissues and aesthetic restorative materials. Material and methods: Searches were made in the electronic databases Medline/PubMed, LILACS and Scielo, to identify clinical and laboratory studies that evaluated the whitening action of the “Blue covarine” optical agent. The keywords found in DeCs and MeSH were used “Blue covarine and toothpaste”, “Blue covarine and dentifrices”, “Blue covarine and  whitening dentifrices”, “Blue covarine and  bleaching dentifrices” in order to restrict the search for studies, obtaining more accurate results. Results: Two researchers critically analyzed and selected 22 articles, including 6 clinical studies, 14 laboratory studies and 2 literature reviews. The researches presented divergences regarding the study design, methods, sample size, clinical and laboratory parameters of evaluation and most of them presented conflicts of interest. Conclusion: “Blue Covarine” present in whitening dentifrices seems to be effective in promoting tooth whitening only when associated with the abrasive agents present in the formulations, showing that other clinical and laboratory tests, which follow similar methodologies are necessary to obtain conclusive scientific evidence on the effect of this optical agent.
