Abstract

Objective: To evaluate pregnant women's knowledge about their own and their baby's oral health and to investigate the practices and attitudes of pregnant women regarding the maintenance of their oral health. Material and method: A cross-sectional observational study that included a sample of 50 women in prenatal care at the Hospital and Maternidade Terezinha de Jesus (HMTJ) in Juiz de Fora. A clinical form with the identification data of the pregnant woman was completed. To evaluate the oral health knowledge of volunteers, a previously structured questionnaire was filled out. The data was organized into a database in the statistical program Microsoft Excel 2010, version for Windows. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed. Results: The majority of respondents (70%) believe their oral health is "very good" or "good" and 88% of them report that oral health influences their general health in some way. Only 17 women (34%) think that pregnancy does not cause problems for their oral health, while others believe that it weakens their teeth or causes the "gums to bleed." When asked if they know how to clean their babies' mouths, the answers were well divided between the "yes" (48%) and the "no" (52%) option, although 94% believed that primary teeth are important for your children. Conclusion: The self-assessment of the oral health of the pregnant women was positive, but in relation to the oral hygiene care of their babies, most of them were never oriented on the subject.
