Objective: To evaluate the behavior of children aged 3 to 7 years during dental care. Methodology: Retrospective cohort study with data collected from medical records of children between 3 and 7 years of age, seen at the pediatric dentistry clinics of a public education institution for 3 academic semesters. Medical records of children with some type of special need, users of continuous medications and attended to in an emergency were excluded. Demographic, socioeconomic data, history of hospitalization and previous dental care, number of dental appointments at the service, type of procedures performed, behavior during care and protective stabilization. Data were tabulated in Microsoft Excel® and analyzed using descriptive statistics in the Stata program version 12.0. Results: Of the 198 children attended during the study period, 81 (40.9%) were included in the survey. Most exhibited collaborative behavior during consultations with noninvasive and invasive procedures, and, generally speaking, there was a gradual increase in collaboration with age regardless of the type of procedure. In consultations with very invasive procedures it was found that the majority tended to be collaborative (66.4%), but in a smaller proportion than in the noninvasive (83.3%) and invasive (78.0%). Conclusion: The majority of the children evaluated collaborated with the dental treatments performed by students in the teaching unit, and behavioral improvement was observed as the child's age progressed. Regarding the level of complexity of the procedure, there was less collaboration in those who performed very invasive procedures.
