Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform an approach evaluating universal adhesive systems, explaining about use and classification, enabling dental surgeon a better knowledge regarding the operation mode of this material. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A search for articles in the English language was performed at Pubmed/Medline, Scielo and Scopus from 2012 to 2021 using the descriptors “universal adhesive” or “universal adhesive systems”. There was inclusion of laboratorial studies (in vitro), clinical trials, literature review and systematic review with meta-analysis. RESULTS: After a meticulous analysis 53 studies were selected. The universal adhesives are considered more user-friendly because allow both etch & rinse and self-etch mode usage, mostly due MDP monomer or similar monomers inclusion. In enamel selective acid etching before adhesive application is recommended. CONCLUSION: Universal adhesive systems were launched to become the adhesion procedure simpler, however more clinical trials with longer follow-ups are required using this material, evaluating properly its effectiveness.
