The aim of present study was to evaluate the dirt of rotary and reciprocating files after instrumentation and pre-sterilization cleaning procedures. Forty-four extracted human maxillary molars were included in the study. Twenty-four rotary files and 24 reciprocating files were randomly assigned to two main groups (n=24), according to the cleaning procedure after instrumentation: G1–hand washing and G2–ultrasonic washing. In each main group, there were subdivisions for the 24 files, as follows: SG1-rotary files without instrumentation; SG2–1 reciprocating file without instrumentation; SG3–2 rotary files submitted to instrumentation without cleaning protocol; SG4–2 reciprocating files files submitted to instrumentation without cleaning protocol; SG5– 10 rotary files submitted to instrumentation and cleaning protocol; SG6– 10 reciprocating files submitted to instrumentation and cleaning protocol. The analysis of dirt levels was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), being the data submitted to the Kruskal-Wallis test, with a significance level of 5%. The lowest average of dirt between the experimental groups was found in SG5 of G1, with no significant difference when compared to the other groups (p>0.05). It could be concluded that cleaning protocols were not completely effective in removing dirt from endodontic files.
