ELECTROMYOGRAPHIC EVALUATION OF MASTICATORY AND CERVICAL MUSCULATURE WITH OCCLUSAL PLATE: CASE REPORT

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the electrical activity of masticatory and cervical muscles and their interrelationship in the stabilization of the craniocervicohumeral chain using the occlusal splint, through electromyographic evaluation. Case report: Female patient, 39 years old, complaining of pain in the head and when chewing, myofascial and cervical pain, with impairment in her daily activities. He reported clenching his teeth during the day and at night he is a very anxious and nervous person. Practice physical exercise 5 to 6 times a week. Submitted to treatment with stabilizing occlusal splint. The electromyographic examination was performed on the masseter and trapezius muscles, bilaterally. Data collection was carried out in two distinct stages: before installing the plate and 90 days after the intervention. Final considerations: After treatment time, a reduction in the behavior of nocturnal and daytime clenching of the teeth, reduction of the previously visible nodule in the suprascapular region and better muscle performance during the practice of physical activity was reported. It is noted that after using the occlusal splint, a satisfactory result was obtained, improvement in muscle pain due to the very objective that the interocclusal appliance has to cause the muscular deprogramming of a harmful behavioral act and allow the mandible to be guided towards the more favorable position, with harmony in the osteoarticular and musculoskeletal systems.
