Abstract

The aim of this study is to review the literature in order to warn professionals in the dental community about the variations in the number of roots and canals of the mandibular premolars, emphasizing the importance of understanding these peculiarities before starting endodontic treatment. The study is a literature review in which the search was performed in the Pubmed database, where 24 articles were found, and 2 articles were attached to this work. The keywords used were "Endodontic failure", "Canal treatment", "Endodontics" associated with each other by the use of Boolean Operators "AND". In addition, a search filter was applied considering the interval of the last 5 years. Root anatomical variations were observed in mandibular premolars, where they had extra roots and canals, and the importance of radiography and root preparation, as well as their filling, was emphasized. The correct diagnosis of the anatomy of the root canal, the proper chemical-mechanical preparation, the correct interpretation of radiographs and the use of the correct filling technique are fundamental procedures to achieve an effective and lasting endodontic therapy, ensuring the oral health and well-being of patients.
