Abstract

Aim: The aim of this literature review is to describe the relevant characteristics of the most prevalent reactive lesions (non-neoplastic proliferations) of the oral cavity. Literature Review: reactive lesions are benign increases in volume resulting from chronic, low-intensity trauma that causes an exuberant tissue response in the connective tissue, where an inflammatory process induces the proliferation of fibroblasts and collagen fibers. Inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia, pyogenic granuloma, peripheral giant cell lesion, peripheral ossifying fibroma, giant cell fibroma and traumatic neuroma are lesions with specific histopathological characteristics, but with a similar clinical appearance. Its treatment is carried out through surgical removal, and it is essential to eliminate irritating factors to prevent recurrence. Conclusion: Reactive lesions are benign in nature, and knowledge of them by the dental surgeon is essential, since these lesions are very prevalent and, in some cases, are clinically similar to neoplasms.
