Abstract

Endodontics is one of the specialties in Dentistry, aimed at preserving the tooth through prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases or alterations of the dental pulp and periapical tissues. Considering the difficulties related to the execution of endodontic treatment, the aim of this study was to evaluate the perception of undergraduate students in Dentistry at the University of Southern Santa Catarina (UNISUL/PB) regarding their knowledge and skills related to Endodontics. All students regularly enrolled in Clinical Supervised Stages (CSS) (I, II, III, or IV), which include the Endodontics specialty, were invited to participate in the research. A questionnaire containing seventeen binary (yes/no) questions regarding endodontic treatment was distributed to the participants. The obtained results were statistically analyzed descriptively and through association using the Chi-square test (α=5%). Fifty-nine students participated in the study. A positive association was evidenced regarding the difficulty in performing rubber dam isolation, radiographs, and endodontic access, as well as knowledge about intracanal medications. In general, it can be concluded that students in more advanced stages (CSS III and IV) of the Dentistry undergraduate program at UNISUL/PB demonstrated greater knowledge and skills related to Endodontics.
