Abstract

Objectives: to summarise the data in the literature on the oral manifestations of bulimia nervosa (BN) and the importance of the dental surgeon (DS) in the diagnostic process of eating disorders (ED); to facilitate the recognition of BN by the DS; to verify the importance of early diagnosis of BN and multidisciplinary action to control this disorder. Literature review: The most prevalent oral manifestation of BN is dental erosion. Social media acts as an aggravating factor in this disorder and contributes to its spread by massifying the ideal of the need to have an ‘ideal body’. However, this altered behaviour stems from a multifactorial dynamic. From this perspective, the identification of predisposition to BN and early diagnosis of this ED are extremely important to avoid exacerbation of signs and symptoms at a dental, psychological and systemic level. In this scenario, the DS must have sufficient knowledge to also recognise other signs and symptoms that can help in this task, such as the presence of dental pain, larger caries lesions, xerostomia, decreased salivary pH, among other indicators. Final considerations: the DS plays a fundamental role in recognising and treating the oral signs and symptoms of BN, as well as diagnosing this ED. As such, referring patients with BN to other health professionals is essential. To this end, the DS must have adequate knowledge of the subject in order to improve the prognosis of patients with BN.
