Astudy of the clinic and histo- pathological characteristics in 20 cases ofpyogenic granuloma (PG) and 22 cases of peripheral ossi- fying fibroma (POF) was carried out, among 1972 cases verified at the Histopathological Diagnosis Service at FOUPF, within 1987 and 2002. For the both studied pathologies, it was verified a cha- racteristic profile of benign beha- vior, reactive and multifactorial lesions, resulting from repetitive injuries, microtrauma and local irritation, with predilection for the vestibular gingiva. Patients' age and gender, as well as the ana- tomical location, clinical aspects and histopathological characteris- tics ofthese lesions were assessed. In relation to age, PGshowed simi- lar distribution betweenthe second and fifth decade of life; while the POF was more prevalent in the second decade. In male patients, 12 cases ofPG and 11ofPOF were found; and for female patients, 11 and 10, respectively. Anterior maxilla was the most prevalent region for both lesions. The his- tological characteristics found in the study were in agreement with the ones previously described in literature. Key words: pyogenic granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma.Downloads
