Abstract

Introduction: Dental caries is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world, and the possibilities for its treatment are constantly being studied and evolving. Ozone has been presented as a promising possibility for treating caries lesions due to its ability to remineralize dental tissue. However, it is necessary to further investigate the effectiveness of this technique for its clinical use. Objective: to carry out a review of scientific literature in order to analyze, compile and present data related to ozone as a remineralizing agent in the treatment of caries lesions. Method: the search for materials was conducted in the PubMed, Bireme and SciELO databases, including articles published from 2011 to 2024, in Portuguese and English. The initial search resulted in 89 articles. Of these, 77 were excluded because they did not meet the established inclusion criteria. In total, 12 articles were selected for detailed analysis. Literature review: the research analyzed showed divergences in relation to the results obtained: some studies identified the remineralizing action of ozone, either alone or in combination with other agents and treatments, while other studies indicated that ozone had lower efficacy compared to others remineralizing agents. Conclusion It is possible to highlight that ozone has potential as a remineralizing agent in the treatment of caries lesions, and can serve as an alternative to conventional techniques. However, more studies are needed to ensure its effectiveness.
