Abstract

Odontoma is a type of tumor of the odontogenic epithelium and may be related to the presence of non-erupted teeth. They are formed by enamel and dentin but may contain varying amounts of cement and pulp. The etiology of odontoma remains unknown. Treatment consists in surgical excision of the lesion. The prognosis is favorable, with low rates of relapse. Failure to diagnose and treat, as well as delay in the removal of this pathology, may cause aesthetic and phonetic changes, and important occlusal changes, implying the association between surgical and orthodontic treatment. Impacted teeth are usually asymptomatic and are usually discovered on routine radiographs. Impaction is caused by local systemic or etiologic factors. Local factors associated with impacted anterior teeth include: odontomas, odontogenic tumors, ankyloses, traumas, dentigerous cysts. Impaction can also be a consequence of the lack of space needed for the normal eruption of the tooth. The most common cause of dental impaction is odontomas. The objective of the present study is to report a clinical case of a child with dental impaction of a left upper central incisor associated with an odontoma, emphasizing and discussing the surgical technique and the surgical planning performed.
