Abstract

Peripheral giant cell lesion (PGCL) is considered a non-neoplastic proliferative
process with significant prevalence in oral cavity. The objective of this research was
to qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate histomorphological characteristics of a
PGCL group, correlating them with the patients' clinical and sociodemographic
findings. For morphological (histopathological) study, the histological sections of the
selected cases were evaluated. Multinucleated giant cells were classified as type 1
or 2 and the quantification of cells exhibiting evidence of phagocytosis was
evaluated in 5 consecutive high power fields (400x) for each PGCL case. In a higher

magnification field, the nuclei of multinucleated giant cells were counted, and an
average was established for each case. Areas of hemorrhagic extravasation and foci
of hemosiderin deposition were evaluated and recorded qualitatively. The results
revealed that sociodemographic characteristics, such as age, sex and race, did not
demonstrate statistically significant associations with the histopathological aspects of
PGCL. However, we observed significant correlations between clinical findings of the
lesions, such as appearance and growth speed, with histopathological
characteristics, such as the number of giant cells and the type of giant cells.
Evidence of phagocytosis, especially in type 1 giant cells, hemosiderin pigmentation
and areas of hemorrhagic extravasation were identified in most of the sample. The
results suggest that the appearance and growth of PGCL in the present study may
be related to specific microscopic features.
