Marriage, Body, Middle AgesAbstract
This paper analyzes the medieval narrative of the lady who was forced by her parents to marry a man of wealth. Having promised her body to the Virgin Mary, the lady resisted the sexual act with her husband, being violently wounded in the vagina. This account appears in different historical sources, however, I will analyze the cantiga 105 of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, attributed to its sponsor, Alfonso X. My interest is to make a comparative reading, with a gender perspective, between the poetic text and the miniatures of the historized codex, or Códice Rico, TI-1 (E2), elaborated in the 13th century, also engaging in discussions about marriage and the body.
