Printed Orientalism:
the Iranian Revolution and its representations through Landrú charges in Clarín journal (1979-1980)

The Iranian Revolution of 1979 was a worldwide political and social landmark in
the history of the 20th century. The process of deposition of the imperial government, an ally
of the United States and configured by a dynastic dictatorial autocracy, led by Shah
Mohammad Reza Pahlevi, was deposed by an unprecedented social and religious movement,
giving way to an Islamic democracy led by the Shiite leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini .
This whole process was continuously followed and reported by the western media. In this
way, we seek to present, through the Argentine newspaper Clarín and, in particular, through
the cartoons of the cartoonist and illustrator Juan Carlos Colombres, the “Landrú”, as a
revolution was presented or illustrated, having as a theoretical reference Edward Saíd and
Orientalism: a theory that proposes, among other issues, a pseudo Western superiority over
the Arab and Muslim world.
