This article aims to offer an historical analysis of the boycotts of the Olympic Games in Moscow (1980) and Los Angeles (1984), within the context of the Cold War. We start from the assumption that sporting mega-events are privileged moments for the issuance of political speeches and the construction of images about national collectivities. In this way, the two Olympic editions in question were presented as moments of inflection in the context of the Cold War, reflecting the existing geopolitical rivalry between the great world powers, but also the technological disparity that already existed at that time between the United States and the Soviet Union, a disparity that that would increase throughout that decade, culminating in the collapse of real socialism in Eastern Europe in 1989 and the end of the Soviet Union two years later
