In the second half of the 1960s, the emergence of a new style of rock caused a change in the contemporary popular music scene that would soon establish itself as one of the mainstream currents of the time: progressive rock. With its spread in the early 1970s, progressive rock would reach places that had never been dreamed of before, especially for something so elaborate and ambitious in its conception and Brazil was not oblivious to this influence. This essay aims to trace this influence within Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), both in artists who attest to the influence suffered, and in those who are not commonly associated with the style. What we want is to propose a beginning of a discussion that contains, and at its heart, the idea that progressive rock had a much greater influence than we usually want to admit, with fruits that resonate to the present day in Brazilian music.
