Militant Career and Militant Capital: Contributions of the Sociology of Activism to the Historiography of the Brazilian Left

Drawing on a theoretical and methodological framework still scarcely mobilized in Brazilian historiography on the left, this article reflects on the analytical potential of the sociology of activism. Through the concepts of militant career and militant capital, it argues that their use allows for a shift from organizational and conjunctural analyses toward the biographical dynamics of engagement. By highlighting the biographical consequences of activism, the article demonstrates the possibility of apprehending militant activity over the long term, as well as understanding the processes of reconversion of dispositions and competencies acquired throughout militant trajectories, particularly in contexts of disengagement.
