Abstract

Incumbido da responsabilidade de governar uma das capitanias mais periféricas do império português, o militar Manuel Ignácio de Sampaio chegou ao Ceará em 1812 com a missão de desenvolvê-lo em diversos setores, e assim, aproximá-lo do mundo civilizado ocidental. A análise documental nos chamou atenção para certas peculiaridades em sua prática discursiva que agiam insistentemente no incentivo ao patriotismo, no sentimento de pertencimento à nação lusa e à fidelidade ao rei. Nosso objetivo nesse trabalho é analisar a prática discursiva deste governador enquanto uma política estatal e civilizatória de constituição de um patriotismo imperial português. Palavras chave: Ceará, pátria, civilização.
