Propostas para a agricultura no início do Império: um estudo comparativo entre as ideias de Friedrich von Weech e Carlos Augusto Taunay

Abstract

Este trabalho analisa as propostas para agricultura e pecuária contidas em dois manuais escritos entre 1827-1828. Os autores, ambos militares estrangeiros, vivenciaram pessoalmente a experiência com atividades agropecuárias no Rio de Janeiro. Friedrich von Weech, agrônomo e oficial do Exército alemão, teve uma curta experiência no Rio de Janeiro, visto que em 1827 retornou à Alemanha. Carlos Augusto Taunay foi oficial nas tropas napoleônicas e, após algum tempo no recém-criado Exército brasileiro, pediu baixa, passando a se dedicar à agricultura. O presente texto procura fazer uma síntese das propostas de ambos, destacando o que apontavam como possibilidades economicamente viáveis para futuros agricultores, especialmente imigrantes que viessem se fixar no Brasil. Considerando que a cidade do Rio de Janeiro, então capital do jovem Império, experimentava um aumento populacional, era estratégico pensar no abastecimento de hortigranjeiros, aspecto este pensado pelos dois autores e objeto deste texto.
