Résumé

O presente artigo tem por objetivo refletir sobre a gestação da cultura histórica brasileira no período imperial, particularmente em sua relação com a disputa pelo passado da Província de São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul. Entre os anos de 1860 e 1863, o caso do pedido de filiação de uma nova instituição dedicada à sua história, o Instituto Histórico e Geográfico da Província de São Pedro (IHGPSP), provocou reações dentro do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro (IHGB), grande responsável pela produção da história do país. Por meio do acompanhamento desse episódio, que envolveu intelectuais atuantes no IHGB e no IHGPSP, o trabalho pretende dar a conhecer um pouco do intrincado processo de forjamento de uma cultura nacional no Brasil oitocentista.
