Résumé

O artigo avalia a possibilidade de compreender as transformações ambientais geradas pela colonização no Rio Grande do Sul, nos séculos XIX e XX, por meio do estudo da trajetória de famílias imigrantes. Emprega a abordagem da história ambiental e relaciona a experiência familiar com a história rio-grandense. Conclui que as condições ambientais também estiveram entre as razões da imigração para o Sul do Brasil, bem como das migrações internas posteriores. A história das famílias estudadas revela indícios de como a presença e o trabalho dos colonos, em interação com outros grupos sociais, geraram profundas transformações socioambientais.
